S-rank originated in Japanese academic and gaming contexts, where S (from 'shu,' meaning excellent) denotes a tier above the standard A-through-F scale. Popularized through arcade games like Resident Evil and Devil May Cry, S-rank has become a universal shorthand for exceptional quality in gaming, anime, and tier-list culture.
