Motor City is Detroit's most famous nickname, earned from the city's dominance of the American automobile industry throughout the 20th century. The same post-industrial infrastructure -- abandoned factories, cheap warehouse space, working-class resilience -- that defined the auto industry's decline also created the conditions for Detroit techno to emerge.
