Straight edge is the counterculture within the counterculture — a hardcore punk movement defined by what you refuse rather than what you consume. Named after Minor Threat’s 1981 track, adherents mark themselves with an X (originally stamped on underage hands at punk shows to bar them from the bar). In a codex built around 78 drugs and altered states, the straight edge tattoo is the deliberate inversion: sobriety as rebellion. It sits in tension with everything around it, which is exactly what makes it interesting.
