a mouth portrayed by a nearly-straight line, holding a toothpick.

[view source]Cultural Context

The toothpick held in the mouth is a character prop associated with nonchalance, toughness, and effortless cool. From film noir detectives to anime characters, the toothpick signals someone who is relaxed but alert — casually dangerous, or at least casually unbothered. It replaced the cigarette as a screen prop when smoking became less acceptable on film.
