The backwards cap has been a staple of youth culture since the 1990s, popularized by hip-hop artists, skaters, and ravers alike. In rave culture specifically, wearing a cap backwards became associated with the carefree, anti-establishment attitude of warehouse parties and illegal raves, where dress codes were nonexistent and comfort trumped convention.
