Star face decorations have a long history in glam rock, new wave, and rave culture. David Bowie's Aladdin Sane lightning bolt and KISS's star-eye makeup established the face star as a symbol of rock theatricality. In acid house and rave culture, star stickers and drawn stars on the face became common accessories, carried forward from glam rock's tradition of face decoration as performance identity.
