Rainbow strokes in a rectangle shape. Symbolizing a pride flag.
[view source]Cultural Context
The rainbow pride flag was designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978 for the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade. Originally featuring eight stripes (each with a specific meaning including life, healing, sunlight, nature, serenity, and spirit), it was simplified to six stripes for practical manufacturing. The flag became the universal symbol of LGBTQ+ pride and rights worldwide, and painting it on the face is a common gesture of solidarity at pride events and protests.
