[view source]Cultural Context
Laboratory flask imagery evokes both pharmaceutical drug synthesis and the broader ethos of chemical experimentation. The Erlenmeyer flask, with its characteristic wide base and narrow neck, has been a symbol of scientific inquiry since its invention in 1860 by Emil Erlenmeyer. In counterculture, lab equipment iconography became associated with the clandestine production of psychedelic and club drugs.
