Persephone is the Greek goddess of spring and queen of the underworld — daughter of Demeter, the harvest goddess. After eating pomegranate seeds in the underworld, she was bound to spend part of each year with Hades, explaining the seasons. Virgo is traditionally depicted holding a sheaf of wheat (the star Spica in the Virgo constellation means "ear of grain"). The sign is ruled by Mercury, which in medical astrology governs the nervous system. Alex Grey is a contemporary artist known for depicting the human body's energy systems and anatomical layers.
