[view source]Cultural Context
Inanna is the Sumerian goddess of love, beauty, sex, and war — the earliest known predecessor to the Greco-Roman Venus/Aphrodite. Inanna was associated with the planet Venus, which the Sumerians recognized as both the morning star and the evening star. Lions are sacred to Inanna; she is frequently depicted standing on the backs of two lions or flanked by them.
