[view source]Cultural Context
Tyr (also Tiwaz) is the Norse god of war and justice, corresponding to the Roman Mars. Tuesday (Old English Tīwesdæg, "Tyr's day") corresponds to Mars' day in Romance languages (French Mardi). Tyr is most known for sacrificing his hand to the wolf Fenrir to bind it — making him a god of war defined by sacrifice rather than aggression.
