[view source]Cultural Context

This piece reinterprets Chen Hongshou's Preparing the Elixir Beneath a Pine (1651), a small ink-on-gold-paper album leaf. Chen was a late Ming master and Ming loyalist who died a year after completing it. His original depicts a Daoist alchemist tending the tripod (鼎) in which the jindan (金丹), or "golden elixir" of immortality, was brewed. The classical recipe was overwhelmingly mineral: cinnabar (丹砂, mercury sulfide), refined and "reverted" (還丹) through repeated transformations, often combined with lead, sulfur, gold, and the arsenic sulfides realgar and orpiment. Several Tang emperors died of mercury poisoning trying.

In this Mibera, the figure from the original painting persists but the flora around him is no longer pine and lingzhi. It is Papaver somniferum, the opium poppy. Opium had a long history in China before it became the substance that broke an empire. Introduced through Arab trade no later than the Tang, yingsu (罌粟) appears in Chinese materia medica for centuries as a treatment for pain, dysentery, and lethargy. Li Shizhen catalogued it in the Bencao Gangmu (1578), seventy-three years before Chen painted his alchemist. By the mid-seventeenth century, opium smoking was just emerging in coastal China through madak, a blend of opium and tobacco arriving with Iberian traders. Two centuries later the British East India Company would weaponize the same plant, triggering the Opium Wars (1839 to 1842, and 1856 to 1860), the cession of Hong Kong, and the long collapse of Qing sovereignty.

Substituting poppy for cinnabar collapses these histories into one image. Both substances are pharmacologically transformative, and both were sought as routes to a different state of being. The cinnabar elixir killed the adept. The opium poppy helped kill a dynasty.

The yin-yang division running through the figure, one half pale and one half shadowed, locates the image inside the dualistic cosmology that underwrites Daoist alchemy and Chinese medicine. Yin (陰) and yang (陽) are complementary poles: lead and mercury, fire and water, the medicine that heals at one dose and kills at another. The poppy is a yin plant of sleep and dissolution. The fire of the alchemical tripod is yang. The figure carries both. Yin and yang, batman and joker. Mibera.

Ancestors are a load-bearing trait in the Mibera system — each of the 10,000 Miberas inherits an ancestor as their cultural lineage. The ancestor grails represent each lineage as its own identity.
