The Tower is card sixteen of the Major Arcana, a lightning bolt strikes a tall structure, figures fall, flames erupt from the windows. This is the most dramatic card in the deck and the one most readers dread drawing. Upright, The Tower signals sudden, unavoidable disruption: the collapse of structures (beliefs, relationships, institutions) that were built on false foundations. The destruction is not arbitrary; it is corrective. What falls was going to fall. Lightning merely chose the moment. In shadow, The Tower warns of clinging to the ruins, of refusing to accept that the old structure cannot be repaired, and of the particular madness of rebuilding on the same faulty foundation.
Fire is the element, and here it is at its most violent, the lightning strike, the uncontrolled blaze. This is not Fire as forge or engine; it is Fire as revelation through destruction, the sudden illumination that comes from seeing everything you built in flames and understanding, in that terrible light, what was real and what was pretense.
